SUMMARY:Concerts on the Square: Scott Ellis Band
DESCRIPTION:Singer-songwriter\, guitarist Scott Ellison emerged as a blues-rock powerhouse in his hometown of Tulsa\, OK in the late 1970’s. With Eric Clapton’s and Freddie King’s backing bands at the time both hailing from the region\, Ellison’s guitar shredding heavy blues style quickly brought him regional and then national attention. He first gained notice playing with Jessica James (Conway Twitty’s daughter) in 1977\, and national blues audiences learned about him via his work in iconic bluesman Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown’s touring band in 1980-81.\n\nHe relocated to Los Angeles\, CA in the mid-’80s\, and honed his chops as a session player for everyone from The Box Tops to Gary “US” Bonds to Peaches & Herb. By the early ’90s he finally took the helm as a leader\, formed his own band\, and opened for the likes of Joe Cocker\, Roy Orbison\, The Fabulous Thunderbirds\, Leon Russell\, Bobby Bland and Buddy Guy. Solo albums soon followed\, beginning with Chains of Love in 1993 and Live at Joey’s in ’95. He returned to Tulsa in ’96 and released Steamin’ the following year and One Step From the Blues in 2000. He signed with Burnside in 2001 and released Cold Hard Cash\, which was produced and co-written by longtime Robert Cray producer Dennis Walker. That album\, along with the 2003 follow-up Bad Case of the Blues were highly successful and marked the beginning of a watershed moment for Ellison that resulted in headlining slots at blues festivals across the US\, Canada and Europe along with multiple European tours. 2008’s Ice Storm yielded his first #1 on the Blues charts with “Cadillac Woman\,” and led to opening for and playing onstage with BB King at the Performing Arts Center in Tulsa in 2009.\n\nWalkin’ Through The Fire was released on his own label\, JSE Records\, in 2011\, paving the way for his 2013 induction into the Oklahoma Blues Hall of Fame. He signed with Red Parlor Records in 2015 for the release of Elevator Man (produced by longtime Eric Clapton keyboard player Walt Richmond)\, Good Morning Midnight (2017)\, and the critically acclaimed Skyline Drive (2020).\nBeyond the traditional blues world\, Ellison has also penned songs that have appeared in films such as Reindeer Games\, Feast of Love and Home Front\, as well in TV shows Sister Sister\, Santa Barbara\, Buffy The Vampire Slayer\, Joan of Arcadia\, Saving Grace\, Smash and four songs on 2012’s hit TV show Justified on the FX Network\n  \n

SUMMARY:Concerts on the Square: Caravan
DESCRIPTION:Caravan is a world traveling instrumental acoustic jazz group based in Madison\, Wisconsin. They are primarily influenced by the legendary Romani Jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. The ensemble also pulls influences from American jazz\, European Folk Music\, traditional Latin\, Parisian waltz\, and other vintage-jazz sources. Expect a range of tunes from the “Hot Swing” repertoire\, originals\, and standards done in uniquely arranged styles.\n\nCaravan has become an experienced\, seasoned group with a diverse repertoire\, and a unique voice in the Gypsy Jazz genre. Although the music of Django Reinhardt is still at the core of the band they have learned to take Gypsy Jazz in a broad range of directions.

SUMMARY:Concerts on the Square: Christo's Novelty Combo
DESCRIPTION:  \nChristo’s Novelty Combo presents a unique mixture of the Vaudeville era\, novelty infused hot steel guitar and ukulele of the 1920s and 30s “Hawaiian Craze” and the swinging sounds of French jazz from the 1930s and 40s. Think Hot Hawaiian guitar meets Jazz à la Django!\n\nThe Combo’s primary repertoire comes from Christo’s “Antique Aloha” and “Café Allongé” records. They use that repertoire to present high energy eclectic shows. Christo peppers in historical anecdotes about the music presented to give it context.\n\nChristo has had extensive performance experience in many settings including large music festivals\, concert series\, night club gigs\, and private events. His Combo is equally as comfortable on the main stage as is is in an intimate living room house concert. Their unique sound is always met with rave reviews!

SUMMARY:Concerts on the Square: Panchromatic Steel
DESCRIPTION:Founded in 2016 in Madison\, Wisconsin\, Panchromatic Steel has blazed an entirely new trail in the city’s music scene\, fusing island styles with pop hits\, rock and jazz into a high-energy blend that is hard to categorize but easy to love. With top-shelf instrumentalism and wide-ranging appeal\, Panchromatic’s music brightens any day\, transports listeners to their happiest moments in the sun\, and threads the needle by being artful yet accessible to virtually everyone.\n\nAt the heart of Panchromatic’s sound is the steeldrum\, or “steelpan” as it’s known in its native Trinidad & Tobago. The instrument is a sawed-off 55-gallon oil drum with the top stretched into a bowl and hand-hammered to create tone-producing dents that ring when struck by rubber-tipped mallets. Its tropical associations are hokey to some and delightful to others; but either way\, the cliches at best tell only a small part of the steelpan’s story. In reality\, they belie the instrument’s fierce but woefully under-appreciated musical tradition – one which boasts levels of complexity\, creativity and energy rivaled by few other musical artforms.\n\nWhile Panchromatic Steel embraces the steelpan tradition\, it also aims for something new with vocals and a variety of other instruments\, including horns\, vibraphone\, keyboards and multiple percussionists. With its multicolored palette\, the band re-imagines danceable favorites by the likes of Earth\, Wind & Fire\, Led Zeppelin\, and Stevie Wonder and rocks them as well as any guitar-based cover band\, and usually far more memorably.\n\n
